Hope your memories of 4th of July are happy ones.
Hope your memories of 4th of July are happy ones.

July is here, bringing the heat, (hopefully) a slower schedule, and plenty of grilled meats. Many of us will take some time off to enjoy summer and family. This is a privilege not afforded to everyone of course, especially 60+ years ago. Many of our clients spent their summers working or caring for younger siblings. Some have hilarious stories about that first job experience and the characters they worked with, the lessons learned, possibly discovering what they do NOT want to do for the rest of their life.

Others recall memories of roadtrips with family, squabbles over space in the backseat, and being forced to "hold it in" until the next rest stop 100 miles away because Dad has a strict game plan from which he will not deviate.

Have you ever asked your parents, grandparents, or other loved ones about their summertime memories? It may just result in a good story you'll be telling around the campfire someday. Here are some good prompts to get you started:

Did you ever hold a summer job?

How did you get the job or choose to work there?

Any interesting coworkers or bosses?

What did you learn from it?

Did you take any summer roadtrips?

What type of car did you take and who went along?

Any memories of vacations gone wrong?

What was your favorite and least favorite trip and why?

Where did you stay when you went on vacation?

Did you visit family from out of town?

Did you have high-end or bare minimum accommodations?

Did you ever go camping?
