How They Met

We work on a lot of husband-wife projects, couples who have been together for decades and have experienced the highs and lows that those wedding vows talk about. These are great stories to save.

Besides asking them how they manage these storms together, I Iove to ask them how they met. Their stories often differ and usually include a few laughs and even a few sparks. Here are some of my favorites:

"I'm not the most romantic person, but I remember thinking this was scary because I really liked her."

"My sorority sister introduced us. I remember thinking he was good looking and also a gentleman. I loved his last name and I was impressed with his car, a blue Chevy Impala convertible with white interior. It was a cool car, but it drank oil like it was going out of style."

"We liked each other from the start, and I thought she was pretty hot! She had been to Africa with the Peace Corps, and I had just gotten back from Vietnam. We had both seen some of the poorest parts of the world, and were changed by it."

"We both worked at the Cancer Institute. He came by because he needed a chemical for his work. He knocked on our door and found not only his chemical, but his future wife! At the beginning, we talked a lot. I had just gotten out of a not-so-great relationship, and wanted to be careful about jumping into another relationship. He was just a very nice guy. He had (and still has) beautiful eyes, and I felt I could trust him."

"I swore I'd never date again, but she convinced me otherwise. I asked her out for coffee and she said, 'Why don't we grab a beer instead?' I was thrilled and thought, where did she come from? We had a beer and then walked on the beach. She was smart, funny, and beautiful, plus she laughed at my jokes. It was great first date. Being with her was like a quiet stroll in a forest. She was so calm and kind."

"When we first met, I thought WOW. She was a knockout! Any spare time that I had I wanted to spend with her.... We had talked about getting married, but I was flaky. Once I was drafted into Vietnam, that changed everything. We were married 18 days before I was shipped overseas."
